Losing a passport is stressful – especially once you begin your trip. There are different steps to take depending on where you lost your passport. If misplaced in the United States, you must report the loss to the State Department ASAP. This will prevent any fraudulent use of your passport and jumpstart the replacement process.

To sum it up – Once a passport is misplaced – Be proactive immediately.

Here are the steps to take:

1. Retrace Your Steps – You’ll need to verify that your passport is completely lost and out of your possession. Check your home, luggage, purses, bags, pockets – you name it. Ask travel buddies if they can double-check their belongings, too. The more eyes peeled – the better.

2. File A Report – Hit up the State Department at 1-877-487-2778. Soon as your passport is considered lost – it is no longer valid. This way, in case someone stole your passport, they’re unable to use it. But that’s why it’s important to be 100% sure it’s stolen! Once reported – you cannot validate it.

3. Fill out 2 Replacement Forms –  You’ll need to fill out forms DS-11 (application form for a passport) and DS-64 (Statement of loss). To complete this step, you need to bring the forms and required documentation in person at a passport acceptance facility.

4. Payment – Unfortunately it costs $100 to replace a passport. If you’re in a time crunch – for an extra $60 – they’ll expedite the replacement to you. But thankfully there’s even an overnight option which costs an additional $14.85.

Hopefully, this situation never happens to you. But if it does – don’t worry. Mistakes happen, and there’s always another route to take.

Be sure to keep calm and travel on.
